Here are some details to prepare you for your jungle yoga hike.
BRING
- A hands-free backpack so you will have the most fun and engagement while remaining safe while hiking rugged trails that may require hands. Let me know if you if you don't have one and I will lend you one.
- Water 18-21 oz, snack, large towel, your wallet, keys, and wear your swimsuit underneath if you think you want to go into the falls.
- Optional change of clothes if you want for after or in case of rain.
- Extra flip flops in plastic bag to change out of muddy shoes on ride back (Towels and flip flops don't need to fit in backpack.)
- Anything valuable to leave in the car; we leave our car unlocked as cars can get broken into around hiking areas or we may get dropped off.
- Too much stuff like pricey sunglasses, jewelry, or anything that might be damaged or lost. You that may fall off in the water.
- Use a neck strap to remain hands free and to ensure camera will not fall.
- Store camera in backpack if not using for long periods to ensure device safety.
- I use my camera often but I know the trails. Hands-free is safest to traverse the streams, rocks and hills.
- If worried about scratches from tree limbs or mosquitos, wear long sleeves and longer pants or capris. I usually wear capri pants about calf legs, and a tank top- once in a while in winter i may wear a rain/wind breaker or light sweater. We may walk calf deep in streams at times so long shorts or capris are okay.
- Swimsuit under loose clothes or bring a suit but remember there are no changing rooms.
- If you are worried about rain wear a windbreaker. Keep in mind you are hiking in the jungle and Hawaii is not a cold climate.
- Mosquito repellent if you are worried and so we can TRY to avoid killing mosquitoes if we can, a tenant of yoga and zen. Keep in mind most people never suffer from bugs because the areas we go to are not infested with insects and Hawaii's insects do not carry diseases.
- We recommend reef walkers available at ABC stores, or any grocery/drug stores. They are about about $12 and great for use in any rocky beaches in Hawaii. Reef walkers remove the worry of wet socks and you can step into the water safely when crossing the water around rocky streams or climbing rocks in the waterfall.
- Hiking/tennis/water shoes may provide more support if you need, but reef walkers are safer. On particularly muddy days from recent rains, water shoes may be slippery. I usually wear the water shoes and go carefully so i love them. Teva like sandals are okay but toe covered is safer not to stub your toe.
- Barefoot is dangerous- Flip Flops are IMPOSSIBLE with mud/rain.
- Keep in mind your shoes/socks/toes may get muddy and wet as you may sometimes walk through streams or mud paths. We wash shoes after at a hose and mud comes off easily and sometimes we don't get muddy at all, depending on the weather.
- We never walk in thick mud that sinks in past the ankle or anything near that depth, but some days, mud can reach the shoe's middle or top.
- There are no restrooms; its real nature...like if you were backpacking or camping.
- 4459 Nuuanu Pali Drive, Honolulu, HI A dirt lot on corner where small Nuuanu Pali and new large Pali Highway meets.
- HAVE A CAR? Drive Yourself so you can continue your day more efficiently: Well meet you at 45 min after the start time - the location is near Kailua, east/leeward side. Many people prefer this so they can head to the beaches on the Kailua side after (the prettiest turquoise waters on our island!)
- You can text before you leave if you want to make sure we're on same timing as I may pick others up from Waikiki.
- WE CAN MEET at the DRIVEWAY side of Barefoot cafe at start time, and go from there- you can have a wonderful breakfast or coffee there - try to identify each other and gather together there at time indicated at the driveway of the cafe (where the street is), our car will pull up there. Try to stay close by nearby table by the driveway so we can ID you.
- If early sit down and say hi to your fellow hiker- this is a good time to make get to know each other a little bit before. Please give 10 min leeway after pick up time as I may need to pull over to help other guests with last minute questions.
- Hikers prefer meeting at the cafe rather than at hotels because of the crazy Waikiki traffic and one-way streets that cause delays. Congestion is a serious issue near hotels!
- If your hotel is more then a 20 min walk, but in Waikiki, contact me and well see how we can accommodate.
- Drop offs are made as close to your hotel on the main roads as possible.
- Note: 2/3rds of our day is in shade.
- there is one 25 min yoga session in the open valley sun so let us know if you have another preference, and we will try to adjust
KEEP IN MIND
- Relaxing, Serene, and Invigorating but also dirty and sometimes muddy. Dress accordingly!
- Make sure everyone in your group has healthy ankles and knees for traversing fallen trees, roots, mud, and other slippery slopes.
- There are no high scary dangerous areas to fall from.
- The day is about 2-5 miles walking with lots of rest along the way. No one has ever been too tired to not make the journey.
- Suitable generally for all those with healthy ankles/knees.
- You will need to not be afraid to hold on to branches that may have some wet dirt and smile mud stains on clothes or wetness.
- (I think only very few of people have ever slipped in mud or dirt - but it can happen to the best of us : ))
- Please come with a relaxed, flexible mind - trusting our experience and being open to new things will provide an optimal, positive experience for you and all.
- We endeavor to bring you to real nature, but because its real nature, perfection and predictability challenge us sometimes. This is the jungle not a botanical garden or tourist resort, so we can't control all things, such as rain - occasional closures etc.)
- We hone every tour to the group's energy and strive for the most suitable day with nice surprises when we can. If we promise a specific area and itinerary, we stick to it, but sometimes we're forced to change plans. Trust our decision making because we have lots of experience and desire to create the most enjoyable day for you.
- Have fun!
